- Know that the Pixel Remaster does not have the worthwhile extra content "Soul of Rebirth" - Only the PSP Anniversary Edition and GBA Dawn of Souls have it. The same goes for the "Arcane Labyrinth" extra content, only available in the PSP Anniversary Edition.
- From here on, advice is based on the Anniversary Edition. There may be differences that don't apply to other versions.
- Use Select+O to open the map. FFII's map is very open compared to other games in the series, so you will need it.
- Hold L+R to have the party flee from battles.
- You can hold the X button during battles to give quick attack commands to the party. You don't need to mash the button.
- Growth: Despite what hilarious youtubers will tell you, no, you don't need to hit yourself to grow stronger in this game. However, you do need to have a clear idea of what roles you want your party members to have. That means selecting your weapon type of choice for each character and sticking to it, so that they can keep leveling up their proficiency in it.
- Magic: The same goes for magic as it also levels up with use. Magic is slow to level because it's not often necessary to cast and expends MP. That means that when you do need it, you want to have more than one caster, so as to grow your spells more rapidly and have more options. Also know that you have 16 slots for spells for each character.
- Gear: The amount of armor you wear determines not only your defense, but also your evasion. If you wear less, you dodge more. Shields, however, are an exception. They give you evasion instead of defense. Enemies will often notice if your evasion stat is low and attack you more, so keep the evasion stat in mind.
- In the early game, try to always have a small stock of Ethers and Phoenix Downs. You can easily overestimate your abilities and run out of MP, leaving you in a bad spot with no way to get out and end up losing progress.
