Resources

  • Keeping the generator running at all times is vital. The monster becomes insanely aggressive and present in the absence of light, making the game insanely tough and slow.
  • Fuel is an extremely valuable resource and should be prioritized over other items you may find around, save for key tools to progress the game. Between refilling the generator and crafting items, it's by far the most important resource to manage.
  • Albeit unpractical, you will unlock a permanent source of fuel. So don't feel the need to hoard it too much either.
  • Bullets are extremely rare. Only use them to get yourself out of a bad situation.
  • Remember you can always easily leave excess resources behind you and come back later. The game will remember where you left things, and the overall map is relatively small.

Progression

  • All wooden doors in the bunker can be broken, either by throwing heavy items on them twice, or a grenade. Many doors can't be opened any other way.
  • The same can be said about padlocks: you can either throw a brick at them twice, or shoot at it to break it.
  • Each area of the bunker has a station at its entrance. Opening them to access the area's map is important, since the game lacks any direct quest journal, opting for map pins to tell you where to go next.
  • A lot of the game's content is randomly generated for replayability. So don't expect codes to work for every playthroughs.

Monster

  • There are extremely few scripted chase sequences. The monster is constantly lurking around and will come out if it hears any loud noise.
  • Pay close attention to the audio cues of the monster going in and out of tunnels. It'll be your key to survive.
  • Blinking lights or noises in the walls are signs that the monster is nearby. Pay close attention to the tunnel entrances for signs of its exact location, or you will be dragged down and attacked.
  • While unkillable, there are many ways to hurt the monster and stun it for a few precious seconds: your gun, explosive barrels, traps, grenades,... The game is very clear that experimenting is key to progress.
  • Keep your health up at all times. Any kind of bleeding will spawn rats around you and quickly turn any situation into an absolute nightmare.

Random remark

  • The German prisoner can be saved. All you need to do is quickly open the cell, grab the item, and run back as fast as you can to close it back before the monster shows up. There is no way to free him, but he remains alive this way.
