King's Bounty: Warriors of the North

From Before I Play
Jump to navigation Jump to search
  • Like with Orcs on the March in the previous game, make sure to switch to Ice and Fire in the main menu before starting a new game if you want to include the additions from it, like snow elves and creature leveling.
  • The game can be crash-prone, so make it a habit to save often.
  • Unlike in the previous games, all damage can now crit, including spells and creature abilities, making crit-boosting effects stronger overall. Spell effects like Bless, Precision and Hell Breath now also affect creature abilities and not just basic attacks, increasing their usefulness as well.
  • There are four items which have an additional use later in the game if held on to: Bottle of Ink, Clay Bowl, Old Shoes and Werewolf Skin.
  • You might want to make sure you have a decent amount of money saved up before starting the climactic story fight of the first "chapter" of the game on the island of Isterreng. In more detail,
all your troops, including the reserve slots, are lost forever after this fight and you have to pay for a new army from your own pocket. Note that you can immediately return to the viking islands with a boat afterwards without having to fight anything, in case you want to rebuild your army with viking units again.
  • Eliminating or disabling Goblin Shamans should be top priority in any fight they're in, as their ability to channel damage taken from one unit to another is far stronger than its tooltip claims, stating it only works between allied units and has a Leadership cap on its targeting. Neither of these are true, they can and will link their allies to your units with no limit to who can be targeted and with no way to dispel the effect, making them extremely dangerous.

Valkyries & Rage

  • The Rage system this time around is based on Valkyries you meet and unlock over the course of the game. Each Valkyrie can be leveled up by gifting them gear from a specific category they want (like regalia for Christa or weapons for Gudrida) and at level 4 they'll offer you a quest when talked to which unlocks their maximum level of 5.
  • The level of the items you gift to Valkyries doesn't matter, so early on any low-level gear you come across is likely worth holding on to for gifting purposes rather than destroying for goodies like in the previous game (once you acquire the skill that lets you do that obviously). Headgear is exempt as no valkyrie asks for them.
  • The "increased level range of targets lured in" upgrade for Christa's Gift, the otherwise useful Valkyrie skill that creates a trapped pile of gold on the field, is bugged in Ice and Fire and doesn't work. The range increase of this ability also seems unreliable.
  • Other than Valkyrie skills, there are also three personal Rage skills associated with the player character which share cooldowns between them, including Viking Vortex which you start with. These three are what's referred to in the rather vague descriptions of the Might talent "Action Rage" which reduces their cooldown, as well as the "Gifted Warrior" medal which increases Rage experience gained from using them.
