* The big difference between the Warhammer generation and the older style of Total War games (aside from... the heroes, magic, artifacts, etc etc) is that "balanced" armies with infantry, cavalry, ranged and artillery are a lot less important. You don't have to go into outright "Doomstack" cheese, but getting research, artifacts and heroes that buff or decrease upkeep on certain unit types, and constructing armies around said buffs, really gets you more bang for your buck. Also, tailor armies to your foes - send something with a lot of fire damage against the Wood Elves, something that busts armor real good against Chaos Warriors, etc.
* Build walls/garrisons everywhere. The AI can see through the fog of war, and it will march across a whole continent to burn down your unwalled towns.
