General structure
- Each of the eight characters has their own storyline consisting of 4 chapters. The storylines run mostly independent of each other and you can cherry pick which one to follow chapter by chapter. You can do every character's storyline on the same save file, and finishing them all (along with some sidequests) unlocks some post-game content.
- Your starting character will be locked into the active party until you finish their chapter 4 storyline a substantial way into the game. Other than that you can pick up whoever you want in their starting towns at any point to start their stories, and rotate characters in and out of the active party as needed. Characters need to be in the active party to do their storylines.
- If you want to beat the final boss, you'll need everyone to be at level 70+.
Particularly good starting characters
- Tressa finds money on the ground any time you change areas.
- Olberic's Level Slash never stops being useful for mob-clearing. (Thousand Spears is also pretty much guaranteed to shred 3-4 tiers of armor from any enemy with a spear weakness.)
- Therion can open the purple chests you find around the world so you don't have to keep track and go back for any. (Steal SP is also a bit crazy early game.)
Shrines
- Shrines will start showing up on the roads outside the chapter 2 towns. They show as small, short black stone circle on the world map if they haven't been discovered yet, and the mini-map icon is a horizontal ring with four columns coming out the top. These unlock secondary jobs for the characters, so get them as you see them.
- One exception: The Cleric shrine is right outside Ophelia's starting town.
Useful info
- The game has a dash when holding down the B button. It's handy for doing side quests in town. It does increase encounter rates out in the field, but it's not especially noticeable.
- Fast travel works everywhere, so it can be used as a dungeon escape if you get in over your head.
- The tavern lets you access every character's gear from one screen, which makes it easier to strip gear from idle characters and pool them for the active party.
- Primrose's chapter 2 town isn't very intuitive to get to. You'll want to go north from H'aanit's starting town towards Victor's Hollow first and watch for signposts guiding you the rest of the way to Stillsnow.
